Why "Everyone Wins" is a Business Myth (And How to Be the Exception)

Business owner running the race while others give up.

For some reason people believe that when it comes to business, "everyone can win." While that sounds nice, the reality is much tougher. Business has a scoreboard, and for every company that hits it big, many others quietly close their doors. As a mentor, coach, and entrepreneur, I'm still running for the finish line. What I do know is that success doesn't happen by accident. It happens because of specific choices and a willingness to use the best tools available. If you want to move from the middle of the pack to the winner's circle, you have to change how you play the game.

Why Most People Don't Win

Before we look at how to win, we have to see why people lose. Usually, it comes down to:

  • Fear of Change: They keep doing what worked yesterday, even when the world has moved on.

  • Lack of Focus: They try to do everything at once and end up doing nothing well.

  • Ignoring the Customer: They build what they want, not what the market actually needs.

5 Steps to Becoming a Winner

  1. Use AI Where You Can - The biggest difference between winners and losers today is speed. Winners use AI to handle the boring, repetitive tasks—like writing emails, organizing data, or brainstorming ideas. This saves hours of time, allowing you to focus on the big decisions that actually grow your business. If you aren't using AI to work faster, your competitor probably is.

  2. Solve a Real Problem - Winners don't just sell products; they provide fixes for other people's headaches. If your business makes someone’s life easier, cheaper, or faster, you have a massive head start.

  3. Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable - Success usually happens right after you want to quit. Whether it’s making a tough sales call or learning a new skill, growth only happens when you step outside your comfort zone. Winners lean into that friction.

  4. Focus on "Small Wins" Every Day - You don’t win a marathon in one giant leap; you win by taking consistent steps. Instead of obsessing over a million-dollar goal, focus on winning the next 24 hours. Better service or one new lead adds up quickly.

  5. Listen More Than You Talk - The best way to beat the competition is to understand the customer better than they do. Listen to feedback—especially the complaints. Those complaints are actually a "cheat sheet" telling you exactly how to improve. If you listen closely, your customers will tell you exactly how to win their business.

Business is competitive, and not everyone gets a trophy. However, by using modern tools like AI, solving real problems, and truly listening to your market, you put the odds in your favor. Winning isn't about luck; it's about being the person who refuses to stay stuck in the past.

What is one "small win" or one customer complaint you can listen to today to get ahead?
